The Life Of An Independent Insurance Agent: Going Above and Beyond For Our Customers
I’ve lived in a few different places during my career as an insurance agent; Minnesota for a year, Virginia Beach for three, and most recently I’ve lived in Northern Virginia for the last four years. Living in Northern Virginia, I have come to notice that people are often more interested in what you do for a living than what your name is. “What do you do?” is just as common as “how are you?”
In short general conversations, when asked, I tell people I’m an insurance agent. If given the opportunity to expand on my response I would reply, I’m one of the owners of Bridge First Insurance, which is an independent insurance agency based out of Alexandria, where we specialize in Auto, Home, Life and Business insurance. People really want to know what I do as an independent insurance agent and how my expertise can help them when it comes to insurance, so let me tell you….
My primary job as an insurance agent is to be a risk advisor to the customer. It is up to me, through the course of conversation, to help the customer identify, understand, and minimize their risk. If you think about it like sports, I am your defensive coordinator and the insurance policies are your players. You never know what the offense (life) is going to throw at you, but after working with an insurance agent you should be confident that you have a player (policy) there to cover you and your family.
Every person, family, or business is different and that is why it is important to consult an insurance agent about your particular needs. For example if you have a car, then you are required by law to have auto insurance. Auto insurance is pretty basic and some might feel confident enough to shop online. However, they may not know what they are buying or realize what coverages they are sacrificing to get a lower premium.
At Bridge First Insurance, we don’t charge any fees to consult with one of our independent insurance agents and we represent 10 different companies in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) area. It is definitely worth the 10-minute conversation to get a professional opinion about your insurance to make sure you have the right policy in place in the event of an accident.
If you read my last blog, What Does Home Insurance Cover?, then you are aware of what an insurance agent does when it comes to homeowners insurance. If you didn’t have the opportunity I recommend going back, as I aimed to educate homeowners on the various aspects of their homeowners’ insurance policy.
Home insurance is not required by law. However, if you have a mortgage it will definitely be required by the lender. There are too many options and variables when it comes to your home insurance that consulting with a Bridge First insurance agent is always recommended. Your home is most likely one of if not the biggest assets you have. You should make sure a licensed, independent insurance agent properly protects your home.
We have covered what an insurance agent does when it comes to home and auto insurance and the two most commonly purchased policies. However, if you really want to see the expertise shine, ask your Bridge First Insurance agent about life insurance. Life Insurance is the one type of insurance that no one likes to talk about. People don’t think they need it and they often put off purchasing it. Here are some cold hard facts about life insurance:
- It is the one insurance you will absolutely need to use
- It will never be cheaper than it is now as prices go up with age and health
- It requires planning
- There are a ton of options
Your Bridge First insurance agent can’t tell you when you are going to need it and they can’t adjust your age or health. But when it comes to planning and your options, we are a resource to lean on.
While most people or families seldom discuss life insurance, your insurance agent does it on a daily basis. We have a wealth of expertise and information at our disposal and would love to help. If we just scratch the surface life insurance, most people plan to only cover their outstanding debt. Debt is a great place to start because when you die, your bills won’t stop coming. After you add up the mortgage, car loan and credit card, what else might you need to plan for? The cost of a funeral, money for your children’s education, income replacement, retirement savings, and the list goes on.
Consulting with a licensed insurance agent can help you determine which costs are fixed, which are variable, and plans that are cost efficient or ways to grow your money. You personally will never know what your insurance agent did for you when they set up the correct life insurance policy, but your spouse and kids will know when that same insurance agent shows up with a check to keep them in your house.
Moving on from a gloomy topic to a more exciting one, what can your independent insurance agent do for your thriving business? Most business ventures start out as a single person who is really good at creating a product or service that people want or need. Similarly, most businesses start out with the idea that they would like to grow and become the best in their field. As your business grows, so does your risk; you may go from 1 truck to 10 and 2 employees to 20 in the span of a few months. It is your insurance agent’s job to make sure your insurance coverage grows with your business.
How many employees do I need to require worker’s compensation coverage? Is my company protected against employee theft? What about workplace harassment? If someone steals all of my customer’s information, am I covered? All of these questions and more can keep a business owner up at night and that is where your Bridge First Insurance agent comes in.
We are licensed and trained to help business owners with all of these decisions. We work with non-profits to home builders to dentist offices and everywhere between to help business owners feel comfortable that they and their employees are protected.
What does an insurance agent do?
So, what does an insurance agent do? Well, as your insurance agent, I will be your defensive coordinator in charge of identifying, evaluating, and offering solutions to protect you against the risks of everyday life. I have been licensed for over 7 years with 30 hours of continuing education required bi-annually to maintain those licenses. I’ve delivered death benefit checks to clients who have recently lost a loved one, and I have seen insurance claims resulting in over million dollar payouts. It is my job as an independent insurance agent to make sure your family or business feels as little impact as possible in the event the worst happens.
